“Continuing Bonds” is an exhibition featuring the work of German artist Johan Steinmetz, which explores themes of grief and memory. Visitors can view RK 511 SE Steinmetz, an artwork comprised of 79 prints, blank spaces, and an audio piece, at the library's entrance area. It offers a personal and introspective look into the ways in which objects can constitute identity and serve as carriers of memory. The artist is present at the vernissage.

More about the exhibition

RK 511 SE Steinmetz is Johan Steinmetz‘ personal and artistic confrontation with grief and loss. The artwork deals with the estate of the artist's late brother. An estate is a list of belongings made when someone dies. In this work, Steinmetz photographically documents the findable objects from that list, the lost objects are marked with a blank space. In his examination of the objects left behind, Steinmetz explores the questions of what material possessions say about one's own identity, and how they serve as carriers of memory.

What is your dearest memory? What makes you think of a loved one? Do you own an object that holds memory? What does it look like? Find more information about the project on Instagram @continuingbonds

The presentation of RK 511 SE Steinmetz is one part of Continuing Bonds. Another part is to actively engage with the exhibition’s themes. For this, artist Zafira Vrba Woodski will host a Memorial Café on Monday June 05th, 17:00-18:30 at Kungsholmen International Library. The event will offer a safe space to openly talk about grief and loss, and to share memories.

Johan Steinmetz is a German artist whose work explores the handling, intervention, and appropriation of different spaces and investigates how changes in the environment affect our perception of it. Through the medium of digital photography, he combines and captures the sculptural and performative aspects of his work. The themes of loss and the feeling of being at a standstill are often present in his work.

The exhibition is curated by Johanna Rüskamp and is part of her degree project within Curating Art, International Master’s Programme at the Department of Culture and Aesthetics, Stockholm University.

it is free of charge and you do not need to book tickets in advance.
